Mental Coaching in Football: Collaborations and Experience in Sport Psychology
Since 2003, I have been working as a sport psychologist in the field of football, supporting players and professional structures in their mental training.
I have worked with professional clubs such as Sporting Charleroi and Union Saint-Gilloise, as well as within coach education programs (UEFA A). My work has developed both within clubs and through individual support, in Belgium and internationally.
Currently, I continue my activities through several complementary areas: collaboration with Sporting Charleroi, individual private consultations with players, and coach education programs within the ACFF (UEFA training).
Over the years, mental training in football has evolved, with an increasing focus on emotional regulation. From a young age, players are exposed to different forms of pressure, which need to be understood and used in a functional way.
Currently, my work is strongly focused on emotional regulation in football, with particular attention to how emotions can be managed and optimized to support performance.
The goal is not to eliminate stress, but to use it as a performance driver. This includes:
- developing positive self-talk
- learning to filter out external distractions
- using positive mental imagery focused on success
A central aspect of the work is the regulation of both emotional intensity and concentration. Too much activation can lead to loss of control, while too little can reduce engagement. The objective is to find the optimal level for performance.
These elements have important implications not only for players, but also for coaches, particularly in how they communicate, prepare games, and support their athletes. This is why mental training work often involves both players and coaching staff.
Within clubs, the work is integrated into a collective dynamic with coaches. In individual support, the setting allows for deeper and more confidential work. Today, many players prefer this format, as it provides a space where they can express themselves freely while ensuring full confidentiality.
